What is a Dosha in Vedic Astrology?

In Vedic astrology (Jyotish Shastra), a dosha refers to a specific planetary affliction or unfavourable combination in a person's birth chart (kundli). The word "dosha" literally means "fault" or "defect" in Sanskrit. Doshas arise when certain planets occupy particular houses or form specific alignments that create challenges in different areas of life such as marriage, career, health, wealth, and spiritual progress.

It is important to understand that doshas are not curses or permanent conditions. They indicate karmic patterns from past lives that manifest as challenges in the current life. Vedic astrology provides detailed remedies for each dosha, ranging from mantras and gemstones to pujas and charitable acts. The severity of a dosha depends on the overall strength of the birth chart — a strong chart with benefic aspects can significantly reduce a dosha's negative impact.

Classical texts like Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (BPHS), Phaladeepika, and Saravali provide the foundational rules for identifying and interpreting doshas. A thorough dosha analysis requires examining the entire chart, not just the presence or absence of a single planetary placement.

How Doshas Are Identified

Dosha identification requires a carefully cast birth chart based on accurate birth details — date, time, and place of birth. The process involves:

• Planetary Positions: The exact placement of planets in houses and signs using Swiss Ephemeris calculations with Lahiri Ayanamsa (sidereal zodiac).
• House Analysis: Examining which houses are occupied by malefic planets (Mars, Saturn, Rahu, Ketu, afflicted Sun) and their aspects.
• Conjunction & Aspects: Checking planetary conjunctions (same house), oppositions (7th aspect), and special aspects (Mars 4th/8th, Jupiter 5th/9th, Saturn 3rd/10th).
• Divisional Charts: Confirming dosha presence in Navamsa (D9) for marriage-related doshas and Dasamsa (D10) for career-related afflictions.
• Cancellation Conditions: Verifying if the dosha is cancelled by specific planetary combinations as described in classical texts.

Dosha Cancellation (Dosha Bhanga)

Not all doshas produce their full negative results. Vedic astrology recognizes several cancellation conditions:

• Mangal Dosha cancellation: Mars in its own sign (Aries, Scorpio), exalted in Capricorn, in conjunction with Jupiter, or when both partners are Manglik.
• Kaal Sarp Dosha partial: If even one planet is outside the Rahu-Ketu axis, the full dosha does not form. Also cancelled if Rahu or Ketu is with a strong benefic.
• Benefic aspects: Jupiter's aspect (5th, 7th, 9th) on the dosha-forming planet can significantly reduce negative effects.
• Dignity and strength: If the dosha-forming planet is exalted, in its own sign, or has high Shadbala (six-fold strength), the dosha's severity is greatly reduced.
• Age-based cancellation: Some texts state that Mangal Dosha's effects diminish after the age of 28 (one full Saturn cycle).

Dosha and Marriage Compatibility

Dosha analysis plays a crucial role in Vedic marriage matching (Kundli Milan). The traditional Ashtakoot Guna Milan system assigns points across 8 categories, with Nadi Dosha carrying the highest weight of 8 points. When both partners have matching Nadi (Vata-Vata, Pitta-Pitta, or Kapha-Kapha), they score 0 points in this category, which is considered inauspicious for progeny and health compatibility.

Mangal Dosha is separately checked beyond the Guna Milan score. If one partner is Manglik and the other is not, traditional astrology advises caution. However, cancellation conditions and the overall chart strength must be evaluated before drawing conclusions. Many successful marriages exist where one partner has Mangal Dosha, because other chart factors provide balance and harmony.
