Kashi Vishwanath ("Lord of the Universe") stands in Varanasi (Kashi/Banaras) - believed to be the oldest continuously inhabited city in the world, founded by Lord Shiva himself. It is said that Shiva and Parvati reside here permanently.
The scripture states: "Kashyam Maranam Muktih" - Death in Kashi is liberation. Even those who die elsewhere, if their ashes are immersed in Ganga at Kashi, attain moksha. Shiva himself whispers the Taraka Mantra into the ears of those dying here.
The temple has been destroyed and rebuilt multiple times. The current structure was built by Ahilyabai Holkar of Indore in 1780. The iconic gold dome (800 kg gold) was donated by Maharaja Ranjit Singh of Punjab in 1839. The Kashi Vishwanath Corridor, inaugurated in 2021, connects the temple directly to Ganga ghats through a grand marble pathway.
