Trimbakeshwar means "Lord of the Three Worlds" (or "Three-eyed Lord"). The temple is unique for having a three-faced Shiva lingam representing the Hindu trinity - Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh (Shiva). The three faces are covered by a jeweled crown which is shown to devotees only on special occasions.
The sacred Godavari River (India's second-longest river, called "Dakshin Ganga") originates from Brahmagiri mountain behind this temple. According to legend, sage Gautama performed severe penance to bring Ganga to the south, and she appeared here as Godavari.
The current temple was built by Peshwa Balaji Baji Rao in the 18th century in Nagara style architecture. The Simhastha Kumbh Mela is held here every 12 years when Jupiter enters Leo (Simha rashi).
