What is Dasha?

दशा - Dasha (Planetary Period)

The Timing System of Vedic Astrology

Dasha Definition

Dasha (Sanskrit: दशा) means "state" or "condition" and refers to planetary period systems in Vedic astrology. The most widely used is Vimshottari Dasha, a 120-year cycle where each of the 9 planets rules for a fixed duration. Your birth Nakshatra determines which Dasha you're born into and the sequence of periods throughout life.

Vimshottari Dasha Periods

The 120-year Vimshottari cycle is divided among 9 planets:

Planet Hindi Years Nature
Sunसूर्य6 yearsAuthority, father, career
Moonचंद्र10 yearsMind, mother, emotions
Marsमंगल7 yearsEnergy, property, siblings
Rahuराहु18 yearsAmbition, foreign, illusion

Total: 6+10+7+18+16+19+17+7+20 = 120 years

How Dasha Works

1

Starting Point

Your birth Nakshatra's ruling planet determines your first Dasha. If born in Rohini (Moon-ruled), you start with Moon Dasha.

2

Balance Calculation

Based on Moon's exact position within the Nakshatra, the remaining balance of the first Dasha is calculated.

3

Fixed Sequence

Dashas follow a fixed order: Ketu → Venus → Sun → Moon → Mars → Rahu → Jupiter → Saturn → Mercury → Ketu...

4

Sub-Periods

Each Mahadasha contains Antardashas (sub-periods) and further subdivisions for precise timing.

Usage Examples

"I'm currently running Jupiter Dasha, which is favorable for education and spiritual growth."

"The astrologer predicted marriage during Venus Dasha - Saturn Antardasha."

"My Saturn Dasha of 19 years will begin next month."
