Mallikarjuna ("Lord adorned with Jasmine") temple is unique as it houses both a Jyotirlinga and a Shakti Peeth in the same complex - making it doubly sacred.
According to legend, when Lord Ganesha and Kartikeya competed to circle the universe, Ganesha circumambulated their parents (Shiva-Parvati) and won. Upset Kartikeya left for Krauncha mountain. Shiva and Parvati came here to console him, but Kartikeya kept moving away. Finally, they decided to stay here as Mallikarjuna and Bhramaramba.
The Bhramaramba shrine is one of 18 Maha Shakti Peeths where Goddess Sati's neck fell. The word "Bhramaramba" refers to bees (bhramara) - the Goddess is believed to have taken the form of a bee here.
