Omkareshwar is uniquely situated on Mandhata island, which is naturally shaped like the sacred Om (ॐ) symbol when viewed from above. This geographical miracle makes it one of the most spiritually significant sites in India.
According to legend, Vindhya mountain once grew arrogant and blocked the sun's path. After being humbled by sage Agastya, Vindhya worshipped Lord Shiva here for forgiveness. Pleased, Shiva manifested in two forms - Omkareshwar on the island and Mamleshwar (also called Amareshwar) on the south bank.
Some traditions count both as Jyotirlingas, while others consider them as one split into two. Devotees typically visit both temples for complete darshan. The 7 km parikrama around the island covers 68 sacred spots and is considered highly meritorious.
