Deep "royal blue" or "ultramarine" most valuable. Even saturation preferred. Afghan lapis has finest blue.

Pyrite Content

Small golden pyrite flecks acceptable and even desirable. Excess pyrite or large patches reduce value. Creates "night sky" effect.

Calcite Content

White calcite veins or patches reduce value significantly. Pure blue without white most prized. Some commercial grades have heavy calcite.

Polish & Cut

Cabochon and bead cuts common. Good polish essential. Carved pieces popular. Avoid rough or dull surfaces.

Critical: Lapis Lazuli is very porous and absorbs liquids, which can permanently damage or discolor the stone. Never immerse in water or expose to any chemicals including perfume and hairspray.
