Today: Panchang, Choghadiya, Rahu Kaal and Muhurat

All timings on these pages are built from local sunrise and sunset. That is why the same muhurat starts at a different clock time in Delhi and in Chennai, and why it shifts by a few minutes each day. Always open the page for your own city.

Section guide

What this section covers

Every page in this section answers one question about the day in front of you: which hours are good, which hours to leave alone, and what the Hindu calendar says about today. It holds the daily panchang with tithi, nakshatra, yoga and karana, the eight Choghadiya slots for day and night, the Rahu Kaal window for four metro cities, the Abhijit Muhurat around midday, and the Amavasya and Purnima dates of the current month.

It helps anyone who has to pick a time and not just a date: starting a business talk, buying a vehicle, booking travel, registering property, fixing a puja, or simply choosing when to make an important call. The lucky color, lucky number and lucky day pages sit here too, because they follow the ruling planet of the weekday and change with it.

Method

How to read a day

Start with the panchang to see the tithi and nakshatra. Then open Choghadiya for your city and pick an Amrit, Shubh or Labh slot for the task. Last, check Rahu Kaal and step around it. Work already in motion is normally allowed to continue through Rahu Kaal, it is fresh starts and signings that people move.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is Rahu Kaal and why does the time differ by city?

Rahu Kaal is one eighth of the daylight span, counted from sunrise to sunset and assigned to a different slot on each weekday. Because sunrise and sunset differ from place to place, the clock time differs too, so Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore and Chennai each have their own page.

Which Choghadiya periods are auspicious?

Amrit, Shubh and Labh are treated as auspicious. Char is neutral and is usually chosen for travel and vehicles. Rog, Kaal and Udveg are avoided for new work, signing and important decisions. The day is split into eight periods from sunrise to sunset, and the night into eight more.

What is Abhijit Muhurat and when does it fall?

Abhijit Muhurat is the window centered on local midday, roughly 45 minutes long. It is considered free of the usual afflictions, so it is used as a fallback muhurat for most shubh karya when no other window is available. Several traditions skip it on Wednesday.

Is Amavasya or Purnima better for starting something new?

Purnima, the full moon, is the usual choice for new beginnings, Satyanarayan puja and completion of vows. Amavasya, the new moon, is kept for pitru tarpan and ancestral rites, and is normally avoided for launches, housewarming and marriage related work.
